In 1980, a 70-year-old man suffered a heart attack requiring surgery. His heart stopped for a full minute on the operating table. Upon awakening in the ICU, he grabbed his daughter's hand and emotionally recounted floating above his body during the cardiac arrest. He saw his two daughters and wife "huddled together" below him and told his daughter with great emotion: "You wouldn't let me go," stating he was no longer afraid of death.
The remarkable veridical element emerged from what the family was actually doing during his cardiac arrest. Unknown to anyone and never communicated to the patient, his wife and two daughters were in the hospital chapel one floor below, huddled together in prayer at the exact moment his heart stopped. The daughter he first told about the NDE was the one leading the prayer aloud while holding the others' hands, explaining why he specifically said "YOU wouldn't let me go" to her rather than his wife. The patient could not have known his family's location or activity through normal means. They were on a different floor, in the chapel, praying together at the precise time of his cardiac arrest. His description of them being "huddled together" accurately depicted their physical arrangement during prayer. The grandson considers this among the rarest NDEs where someone observes actual events occurring elsewhere during their experience, providing strong evidence for consciousness temporarily leaving the body during cardiac arrest.
