On his 18th birthday, Sylvain was a passenger in a drunk driving motorcycle accident, colliding with a parked vehicle in front of a hospital at midnight. He struck the asphalt twice, losing his helmet on first impact. He fell into a light coma for five days while undergoing surgery for multiple fractures and cranial/facial trauma with bleeding. During surgery, he experienced floating above the operating table as "only a pair of eyes" with no bodily sensations. The surroundings were black with no tunnel or light, just consciousness. He observed the surgeons and nurses working on him from above. Upon waking days later, he described the surgeon, the operating room layout, number of people present, and their positions. The surgeon was astonished by his accurate descriptions and told him he was lucky to survive. A nurse later informed him he had experienced an NDE.
