When someone noticed signs of life, resuscitation resumed successfully. The patient survived and was neurologically intact the next day.
The patient provided detailed descriptions of the emergency room events to the doctor. Most remarkably, he accurately described a nurse who assisted - specifically her "wedge" hairstyle and her last name: Hawkes. He had read this name on her name tag during his out-of-body experience, despite being clinically dead at the time. Additionally, he observed a nurse rolling a cart down the hall with "two things on it that looked like table tennis paddles," accurately describing the defibrillator paddles used in his resuscitation. The attending physician confirmed these details could only be known if the patient had actually observed them, as they were too specific to guess. The ability to read a name tag while clinically dead after 35 minutes of failed resuscitation represents a particularly strong veridical element. This case demonstrates visual perception with sufficient clarity to read text during clinical death, suggesting consciousness with enhanced rather than diminished perceptual abilities despite absent brain function.
