Dr. Tom Aufderheide's first patient as a new doctor experienced repeated cardiac arrests from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM, requiring continuous defibrillation. During this exhausting ordeal, when lunch arrived for the unconscious patient at 1:00 PM, the famished Dr. Aufderheide decided to eat it himself. The patient's condition finally stabilized after many hours of intensive intervention.
Thirty days later, before discharge, the patient recounted his NDE to Dr. Aufderheide. After describing his experience, he remarked: "You know, I thought it was awfully funny... here I was dying in front of you, and you were thinking to yourself, 'How could you do this to me?' And then you ate my lunch!" These were Dr. Aufderheide's exact private thoughts - he had indeed thought "How could you [senior doctors] do this to me?" when left alone with this critical patient. Dr. Aufderheide later revealed the patient had observed even more: a conversation in the hallway between Aufderheide and the patient's wife, and a cardiac monitor outside his physical field of vision. Most remarkably, the patient received Aufderheide's panicked thought BEFORE resuscitation even began. Dr. Aufderheide, now Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of the Resuscitation Research Center at Medical College of Wisconsin, stated: "That got my attention, and to this day I have no explanation." The veridical elements are exceptional: telepathic reception of private thoughts before resuscitation, observation of eating the lunch, hallway conversation while unconscious, and viewing equipment outside normal visual range. The thought reception occurring before medical intervention suggests consciousness independent of brain function.
