On Christmas Day in the late 1990s at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Washington, a patient with an oral infection developed an infected heart valve requiring emergency surgery. Dr. Lloyd Rudy and Dr. Roberto Amado-Cattaneo performed the valve replacement, but could not wean the patient off bypass. After exhaustive efforts, they pronounced him dead, turned off all machines, and began post-mortem procedures. The anesthesiologist left to eat, instruments were being removed, and the patient was sutured for autopsy.
Remarkably, after 20-25 minutes with no heartbeat, blood pressure, or cardiac activity (confirmed by continuous monitoring and transesophageal echocardiogram), the patient spontaneously recovered cardiac function. The monitoring equipment had been left running, documenting the flatline period and subsequent return of electrical activity. The surgeons, who had removed their surgical attire and were discussing the case at the doorway, rushed back to successfully complete the resuscitation. Days later, the neurologically intact patient accurately described floating above the scene. He saw Drs. Rudy and Amado-Cattaneo standing in the doorway with arms folded discussing the case in their short-sleeve shirts. Most remarkably, he described Post-it notes accumulating on a monitor screen containing phone messages that had arrived during the surgery - impossible to know beforehand as no calls had come before the operation. He also described the chaotic return of the anesthesiologist. Dr. Amado-Cattaneo confirmed every detail, emphasizing the patient's eyes were taped shut during surgery and he was loaded with anesthetics. Both surgeons considered this medically inexplicable, with Amado-Cattaneo calling it "a miracle unexplainable by current scientific knowledge."
