In the mid-1980s in East Germany, intensive care nurse Baroness Andrea von Wilmowsky witnessed an extraordinary case involving a woman admitted with severe heart attack. The patient arrived already clinically dead after failed resuscitation attempts en route. The hospital resuscitation was chaotic with too many people present. During the chaos, an IV bottle was knocked off and smashed, and von Wilmowsky's wooden rose-shaped hair clip fell from her hair and was broken when someone stepped on it. The patient was successfully resuscitated and kept unconscious in intensive care.
Von Wilmowsky left for a three-week vacation immediately after that shift. Upon returning, she found the patient conscious but still in poor condition. Out of the blue, the patient asked: "What happened to your pretty rose hair clip?" When told it had broken, the patient revealed she had observed the entire resuscitation from a corner near the ceiling during her out-of-body experience. She accurately described seeing the hair clip fall and get stepped on, identified the doctor who broke it, and witnessed the IV bottle smashing - all while clinically dead. The patient also described experiencing an extremely bright light and extraordinary joy during her NDE, feeling all her questions were instantly answered and experiencing unity with the world. She expressed disappointment at being resuscitated back into her pain-riddled body. The veridical observations are particularly compelling as the patient had no way to see the hair clip normally, von Wilmowsky had been absent for three weeks, and the patient accurately identified who had stepped on it. This case from East Germany in the 1980s is notable for its specific veridical details observed while clinically dead and the delay between the event and the patient's ability to communicate what she had witnessed.
