Between 1982 and 1984 at a cardiac ward in East Lancashire, England, head nurse Andy witnessed a remarkable case involving an elderly gentleman who suffered cardiac arrest requiring immediate resuscitation. During the emergency response, the attending nurse fumbled and dropped a kidney tray containing a full syringe of cardiac stimulants. The nurse quickly prepared another syringe while the attending physician chided him for his clumsiness. The dropped syringe rolled under a bedside locker, unnoticed by the medical team.
The patient responded well to the resuscitation and was immediately transferred to intensive care. Three days later, when he returned to the cardiac ward, he recounted his near-death experience to nurse Andy. The patient described observing the resuscitation from above his bed and specifically mentioned witnessing the syringe incident and hearing the doctor's chiding remarks. Most remarkably, he knew the exact location where the dropped syringe had rolled - under the bedside locker - a detail that the medical team had not noticed during the emergency. The veridical elements include the accurate description of the dropped syringe incident, the doctor's verbal chiding, and most significantly, the previously unknown location of the syringe under the bedside locker. The patient observed these events while in cardiac arrest requiring resuscitation, when conscious observation should have been impossible. Head nurse Andy found this case particularly memorable among the many NDEs reported by patients during his tenure at the cardiac ward, due to the specific and verifiable nature of the patient's observations during his period of cardiac arrest.
