Carole, an elderly patient of Dr. Laurin Bellg in Appleton, Wisconsin, suffered from severe sepsis affecting multiple vital organs simultaneously. Her kidneys were particularly affected, constantly signaling the need to urinate, though her urine was being drained through a bladder tube. Being completely sedated and unconscious in the ICU, she couldn't be told that urination was being handled automatically. During her unconscious state, Carole experienced an OBE where she saw a female nurse and tried getting her attention for bathroom assistance. The nurse appeared to completely ignore her, similar to Don's experience. Frustrated, she got out of bed searching for a bathroom - impossible given her sedated, unconscious state. After regaining consciousness, Carole told Dr. Bellg she had gotten up to ask someone about the bathroom, saw a receptionist, and asked for directions but was also ignored. She identified the receptionist as Meg, accurately describing her short, spiky blonde hair with dark roots. Dr. Bellg was intrigued because Meg only worked part-time and had last worked a couple days before Carole awoke. Carole was definitely still under deep sedation with a bladder tube when Meg was working. Being on a ventilator, Carole couldn't have talked as she described. There was no possible way for her to leave her bed and room to converse with the accurately described secretary. Dr. Bellg confirmed Meg's appearance and that she was only awakened from the medically induced coma when Meg wasn't working, making this observation impossible through normal means.
