Don suffered a terrible car accident resulting in multiple fractures requiring traction immobilization at an Appleton, Wisconsin hospital. His injuries included bruised lungs, severe heart contusion, and head trauma causing unconsciousness. Due to the head injury, lung damage, and broken bones, he was placed on artificial ventilation while being stabilized in the ICU. Despite being unconscious and literally unable to turn over, Don experienced trying to get a female nurse's attention. When she didn't respond and walked out, he felt ignored and, in his experience, got out of bed to follow her and confront her - physically impossible given his immobilized condition. Don accurately observed details beyond his physical sensory range, providing veridical perceptions. Dr. Bellg identified the exact night this occurred because the red-headed woman Don sought was a visiting nurse completing her two-month assignment with a night shift before moving to another city. Don described leaving his ICU room through sliding glass doors, following voices around the corner to find nurses at a central station working on computers - a work center he later described in perfect detail despite being unable to see it from his room. He approached them, spotted his nurse, and tried talking to her, but she didn't acknowledge his presence. When asked for more details, Don perfectly described the nursing station and the nurse with short, wavy red hair who had already left the hospital before he awakened from sedation. Despite Bellg suggesting he had an OBE, Don couldn't comprehend this possibility given his complete immobilization in traction.
