This 1985 case from Hartford Hospital in Connecticut bears remarkable similarity to the famous Maria's tennis shoe case, a coincidence the investigators explicitly acknowledged as an example of "seriality" - meaningful coincidences without causal connection. The anonymous female patient was examined by nurse Kathy Milne following her NDE. During resuscitation, the patient experienced being pulled upward through the hospital floors while observing her body being worked on below. She eventually found herself above the hospital roof, viewing Hartford's skyline. While marveling at this aerial view, she noticed a red object in her peripheral vision that turned out to be a shoe. Her attention to this shoe preceded her being "sucked up" through a blackened hole, after which she experienced other typical NDE elements. When Milne shared this account with a medical resident, he initially responded with derision and incredulity. However, later that same day, his skepticism prompted him to request roof access from a custodian. To his amazement, he recovered the red shoe from the roof and brought it inside the hospital, his disbelief completely vanquished. The verification of this impossible observation - a shoe on a roof invisible from any patient area - provides compelling evidence of consciousness operating beyond physical constraints. The parallel with Maria's case, discovered independently at different hospitals years apart, suggests these veridical perceptions during NDEs may follow certain patterns. Neither Milne nor her patient had heard of Maria's case, making this independent replication particularly significant for establishing the reality of out-of-body perception during near-death states.
