Mr. O., a 60-year-old retired manual laborer, experienced a near-death episode in July 1976 during a heart attack that led to cardiac arrest. Cardiologist Michael Sabom interviewed him in August 1977 after learning about the NDE. During his out-of-body experience, Mr. O. observed the resuscitation procedures being performed on him, though Sabom was unable to locate medical records for verification. More remarkably, during his OBE, Mr. O. saw his wife along with his eldest son and daughter standing beside a doctor in the hospital corridor, crying. This observation proved highly evidential when investigated. His wife had not planned to visit that day as he was expected to go home the next day. However, their eldest son and daughter unexpectedly stopped by to see her, and having time, they decided to surprise Mr. O. with a joint visit. They arrived unannounced at the hospital without calling ahead. As they walked down the corridor toward his room, they encountered significant activity and were stopped by a nurse about 10 rooms away. The wife recognized her husband's gray hair as he was being wheeled out, though his face was turned away and she could only see the top of his head. He was taken directly to intensive care on another floor without passing them. Three days later, Mr. O. told his wife he had seen everything, including them standing at the end of the hall talking to the doctor. The wife emphasized the impossibility of this observation: his head was facing away, he couldn't have seen them even if conscious, he couldn't have known she would be there or who she was with as she has six children, yet he correctly identified who was present.
