Ricardo, age 82, collapsed during dinner and was brought to a San Antonio hospital where Dr. John Lerma, then an intern, attempted resuscitation. After the first electrical shock, Ricardo's heart rhythm was restored. He awoke mumbling about "the light" and described a classic out-of-body experience, comparing it to a roller coaster. He met angels who told him he would survive. Following another cardiac arrest, Lerma delivered epinephrine directly into Ricardo's heart, successfully restoring rhythm. Ricardo had suffered a major infarction but responded well to treatment. During his OBE, Ricardo reported floating above the trauma room where he spotted a 1985 quarter lying on the right-hand corner of an 8-foot-high cardiac monitor, amidst dust as if placed there deliberately. He asked Dr. Lerma to verify this observation to prove his experience was real. When Lerma climbed a ladder in the presence of nurses to check, he found the quarter exactly as described, including the correct year: 1985. Lerma noted Ricardo had not been physically capable of climbing a ladder for years, and no connection could be established with ER staff who might have placed it there. The verification of this specific, hidden detail provided compelling evidence that Ricardo's consciousness had indeed separated from his physical body during the resuscitation.
