Jacques Baranowski, a 20-year-old football player, was driving with his pregnant girlfriend Florence and two friends when their car was hit by a bus going 50 mph on October 21, 1981. Florence and his best friend died in the accident. Jacques suffered severe injuries and had two cardiac arrests with corresponding NDEs at the hospital in Paray-le-Monial.
During his first cardiac arrest in the afternoon after learning of Florence's death, Jacques saw himself out of his body for the first time, observing the medical team from above. He specifically noticed that the surgeon called in for resuscitation had tape on the arms of his glasses. He also saw his family members in tears, particularly his aunt. Later that evening, between 9 PM and midnight in the orthopedic surgery department Room 12, Jacques had a second cardiac arrest. Nurse Danièle noticed he lost consciousness and vital signs. The surgeon pronounced him dead and asked Danièle to call his family. During his second NDE, Jacques saw a staircase with white light at the end where Florence stood with outstretched arms, calling him to join her. He hesitated, then found himself hovering over Nurse Danièle's shoulder in the nurses' station (65 feet away behind a closed door) as she spoke on the phone with his estranged biological mother. Jacques heard both sides of the conversation word-for-word. He tried unsuccessfully to make Danièle hang up. He then found himself hovering above the surgeon writing his death certificate, again noting the taped glasses. Upon spontaneous revival, Jacques immediately told the nurse's aide that Danièle was on the phone with his biological mother and he didn't want them talking. When Danièle returned, Jacques repeated both sides of the phone conversation verbatim and told her about the surgeon with taped glasses writing the death certificate. Nurse Danièle confirmed decades later that Jacques had repeated the exact words of both sides of the conversation, despite the impossibility of hearing it from his room.
