Helene, an elderly woman with lung cancer, was being treated in an ICU due to an adverse reaction to penicillin. As relatives kept vigil, she passed in and out of consciousness. At one point, she was able to tell her priest and two sons about her near-death experience.
During her NDE, Helene experienced climbing a beautiful marble staircase, surrounded by harp music and extraordinarily scented flowers of unearthly colors. As she ascended the steps, she passed through a series of four rainbows. She encountered her sister, who was still living, and said goodbye to her. When she reached the fourth rainbow, she knew she must turn back. She then "heard a phone ring" - though no phone actually rang in the room - and knew there was a message for her family. Helene then found herself watching a scene that "unraveled like a picture" before her. It was dark and pouring rain. She witnessed a vehicular accident at an intersection involving a car and a truck. She observed two young men in the car, with one being thrown out of the vehicle and landing in a muddy ditch. She then knew with certainty that a cousin of her grandchildren, who lived in South Carolina, had been killed. This specific vision included highly detailed observations of the accident scene, including the weather conditions, the vehicles involved, the location, and the fate of the occupants. The next day when her grandchildren visited, she asked them, "Which one of your cousins has been killed?" Her grandson replied that nothing was wrong in their family. The grandmother answered with certainty, "Yes, there is: Your cousin has been killed." The grandchildren soon learned that their cousin had indeed been killed in the night, two states away. Investigator Justine Owens was able to interview corroborating witnesses and review police and medical records, confirming that the information reported from the NDE was both highly specific and unlikely, yet matched the police and medical records. The grandmother's medical crisis and the fatal accident occurred at the same time.
