In a neurology ICU, nurse Norma Bowe encountered a female patient with a stitched head wound who had been in a coma for several weeks. During this time, the patient suffered cardiac arrest and was resuscitated after repeated attempts in the ER. When she emerged from her coma and was disconnected from life support, she reported having an out-of-body experience during which she observed the room from above. The patient suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder centered on memorizing numbers, compulsively committing every number she encountered to memory. She claimed that during her OBE, she had memorized the serial number on top of the seven-foot-tall respirator. She chanted the 12-digit number to Bowe and colleagues, who wrote it down. Days later, when respiratory staff came to remove the now-unneeded machine, the nurses asked a custodian to climb up and check for a serial number. After brushing away dust, he confirmed there was indeed a 12-digit serial number that matched exactly what the patient had recited. Bowe confirmed in 2020 that this story was "absolutely real" and that the patient said she saw the numbers while "clinically dead" when her heart had stopped, floating at the top of the room looking down.
