At Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, surgical intensive care unit nurse Joyce Harmon had just returned from vacation wearing new plaid-patterned shoelaces she had purchased during her trip. On her first day back, she was involved in resuscitating a female patient whom she had not previously known. Harmon administered medications during the successful resuscitation. The next day, when Harmon encountered the patient by chance, the woman spontaneously exclaimed, "Oh, you're the one with the plaid shoelaces!" This startled Harmon, causing the hairs on the back of her neck to stand up. The patient explained that during her cardiac arrest, she had died and observed the resuscitation scene from above, specifically noticing Harmon's distinctive plaid shoelaces. This observation would have been impossible from the patient's physical position during the resuscitation, as she was unconscious and being worked on by the medical team. The specific detail of the newly purchased plaid shoelaces, which Harmon was wearing for the first time at work that day, makes this veridical perception particularly compelling as evidence of consciousness existing outside the physical body during clinical death.
