In 1971, Bruce Greyson, then beginning his psychiatric training at the University of Virginia, was called to evaluate Holly, a university student who had overdosed. While eating in the cafeteria, his pager went off and he accidentally splashed spaghetti sauce on his tie. He wiped it off, leaving a red stain, and put on a white lab coat to hide it. Holly was unresponsive in the emergency room, so Greyson went to interview her roommate Susan in the family lounge down the hall. During the heat of late summer, Greyson unbuttoned his lab coat, inadvertently exposing the stained tie. After noticing it, he buttoned his coat again before returning to see Holly, who remained unconscious and was admitted to the ICU. The next morning, Holly was groggy but claimed she remembered Greyson from the previous night. Despite being unconscious in the ER, she said she saw him talking with Susan on the couch in the lounge, not in her room. She then stated firmly that he was wearing "a striped tie that had a red stain on it," and proceeded to accurately repeat the entire conversation between Greyson and Susan, including Susan's pacing and Greyson moving a fan, without any mistakes. This experience profoundly affected Greyson, introducing him to the phenomenon that would later be termed near-death experiences when Raymond Moody joined the program in 1976. The observation of the stained tie from a distant location while unconscious provided compelling evidence of consciousness functioning beyond the physical body.
