Carlita, a 38-year-old Latina patient, was unconscious in Dr. Laurin Bellg's ICU suffering from complications of meningitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis. Despite antibiotic treatment, she remained unresponsive for days. Dr. Bellg tested her reflexes by pressing her thumbnail on the nail bed and checking eye reflexes, finding no response whatsoever. Only after 13 days did Carlita begin responding and was eventually transferred to neurology. When Dr. Bellg visited her, Carlita revealed she had observed the examination from outside her body. She accurately described watching Dr. Bellg pick up her hand and pinch her finger, wondering why the doctor would do that. She saw the nurse tickling her feet with a stick and rubbing her chest with knuckles. Carlita observed Dr. Bellg shining a light in her eyes while the nurse held them open, moving her head side to side. Remarkably, she reported seeing all these procedures but feeling nothing, watching from a standing position beside her bed. She noted the strangeness of seeing the light being shone but not experiencing brightness from her out-of-body vantage point. Dr. Bellg confirmed all these specific neurological tests were performed exactly as described. The visual observations cannot be explained by tactile stimuli since Carlita showed absolutely no response to any of the physical tests at the time.
