J. S., 31 weeks pregnant, felt breathless and weak, requiring emergency caesarian delivery followed by surgery to repair aortic dissection. During deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) for 15 minutes - where body is cooled and heart artificially stopped - she experienced an OBE. Despite being anesthetized with eyes taped shut and unable to see machines behind her head when wheeled in, she observed a nurse handing instruments to the surgeon and saw anesthesia and ultrasound equipment located behind her head. She also experienced peace, joy, and saw bright light. Dr. Beauregard's team verified her descriptions of the nurse and equipment with the surgeon, who confirmed their accuracy. This case, from a retrospective study of conscious experiences during artificial cardiac arrest (2005-2010), represents the most significant of three documented cases.
