Al Sullivan, a 56-year-old van driver, underwent emergency cardiac surgery at Hartford Hospital. During the operation, he experienced leaving his body and observing the surgery from above. He saw his surgeon, Dr. Hiroyoshi Takata, exhibiting an unusual behavior - "flapping his arms as if trying to fly." Sullivan's eyes were taped shut and a sterile drape blocked his vision, making physical observation impossible. Dr. Takata later confirmed this was his unique habit of pointing with his elbows to avoid contaminating his sterile hands, something no other surgeons did. Cardiologist Dr. LaSala confirmed Sullivan reported this immediately post-surgery and verified Takata's unique habit. Takata himself stated he cannot explain how Sullivan saw these things "under complete sleep of anesthesia" and acknowledged that science has not yet revealed all human abilities, accepting this as fact that "such things do happen."
