A 9-year-old girl with serious kidney disorder was being transported from a Kent hospital to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London when she suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance during rush-hour traffic. Despite prolonged resuscitation attempts while stuck in traffic, the team could not restart her heart, and a nurse suggested pronouncing her dead. Dr. Joan La Rovere had an intuitive feeling to continue resuscitation, talking reassuringly to the girl throughout. Her heart finally restarted upon arrival at the hospital, though she remained in critical condition. Months later, when the recovered girl visited the hospital, she asked to meet "the American doctor who looked after me in the ambulance and was talking to me during the trip." She reported watching everything from above and recalled all details, despite having been too ill and on life-support to have seen anything normally. The experience amazed Dr. La Rovere as the girl had never physically seen her during the transport.
