Margaret, 21, experienced an NDE during childbirth in the hospital after being informed her baby had died shortly after labor began. Despite warning staff of her known allergy to Suxamethonium, she was given an anesthetic containing this drug, resulting in excruciating, protracted labor described as torture. The pain was so severe she welcomed death as relief. Upon receiving the anesthetic, she collapsed and found herself out of body in a vast blackness without physical form, feeling she was "leaking" into the void. She experienced profound contentment and peace, relieved to escape the pain, describing herself as a "huge smile." Her attention split in two: one part engaged in dialogue with a male disembodied voice she understood to be both her deceased child and something extremely wise and all-knowing. The voice taught her about how life works and she felt instinctively she was hearing truth. Meanwhile, she became increasingly adverse to a gradually approaching light, developing a sense of foreboding. When the voice asked what was wrong, she expressed fear of entering the light because while she wouldn't cease to exist, her ego, character, and individual personality would be gone. She then witnessed her husband's grief upon hearing of her collapse and the baby's death, followed by seeing her parents being told of her death and their sadness. Contemplating the grief her death would cause, she began falling and then awoke.
