Jane was a young woman in her twenties who experienced an NDE during emergency surgery for a burst stomach with peritonitis. She was in extreme physical pain and feared dying when she asked a nurse if she would die. The nurse hesitated before answering, which prepared Jane mentally to accept death. During the operation, Jane experienced powerful emotions including fear, anger, anxiety, isolation, and remorse against distinct visual and auditory motifs. She found herself falling through darkness toward a globe of light while hearing a mysterious chant that felt deeply familiar, believing she had heard it hundreds of times before and during a previous operation at age 10. At the end of her fall, she encountered a group of discarnate beings described as gentle, loving, and glowing from within. She engaged in dialogue with these beings about whether she would remember the chant, which she believed would validate her experience. Despite her anger at their challenges, they offered understanding and told her she would hear the chant again in her lifetime. When asked why she wanted to return to life, she expressed her desire to have children and watch them grow up. Jane then found herself in a dark, lonely void where she reflected on her relationships with friends and parents, particularly her conflicted relationship with her mother, feeling remorse for things said and done. In this place where time had no meaning, she heard a voice say "don't be too hard on yourself" before returning to her body and awakening from the operation.
