In 1911, Fanny Ruthven Paget, a Houston, Texas resident, experienced a near-death episode during what appears to have been severe pneumonia lasting several days. While gravely ill, she found herself looking down at her own body lying peacefully on the bed, appearing as what is commonly called a dead person. She was fascinated by the sight of her physical form dressed in a lavender silk gown with dainty laces and ruffles. Her eyes were at half-mast with the light gone since the soul was absent, her lips slightly parted with a suggestion of a smile, her left hand resting on her breast with her engagement ring still scintillating, and her right hand fallen apart from the body with palm upturned. After observing her seemingly deceased body, Paget became concerned about her fiancé in another town and found herself propelled by a vibratory sensation to his sleeping form. From this otherworldly perspective, she could see his shadow body more distinctly than his physical body - the shadow seemed the original and the physical the duplicate, the soul the real and the body the unreal. She observed a light penetrating from within both the shadow and physical bodies, maintaining an aura or illumination that enveloped him like magnetized clothing. This three-in-one life manifestation of physical body, shadow body, and inner light struck her as wonderful, especially since people generally recognize only the physical aspect. The experience provided her with direct perception of the spiritual anatomy beyond normal physical sight.
