John, a 34-year-old divorced construction worker, experienced a life-threatening accident on February 22, 1992, while working with his partner using nail guns. In an unexplained accident where his partner fell against him, John shot himself in the chest with his own nail gun, sending a one-and-three-quarter-inch finishing nail directly into his heart through the sternum. With every heartbeat, the nail was tearing a bigger hole in his heart. John immediately told his partner "I'm shot in the heart. I don't believe I am going to die!" before rushing toward their truck in intense, throbbing pain.
During transport, John went into convulsions, slamming his head and arm into the dashboard and kicking the stick shift. Suddenly, he found himself in a different realm, lying on his back with his arms folded across his chest and ankles crossed, still feeling physical pain but knowing he was no longer in the truck. He recognized he might be having a near-death experience, having heard about them previously. Two waves of brilliant light came over him - the first maintaining his pain, but the second even more brilliant wave eliminating all pain and bringing a state of bliss and peace. The most remarkable aspect was when a large right hand, representing God, positioned itself over John's body, hovering about three feet above him. The hand was the brightest white imaginable with fingers outlined as if sketched in pencil. When John asked what he should do, a loving voice said, "You are all right. I like you." As the hand withdrew and the first wave of light returned, so did all the physical pain. John then heard people yelling and someone shout "He's back!" The experience profoundly transformed John's life priorities. His partner noted how remarkably calm he was upon regaining consciousness. John now appreciates life, helps others, and no longer dwells on small things, having completely eliminated his previous work-first mentality. The validation from God helped him process his recent divorce and separation from his children.
