Crystal McVea, who described herself as having broken "all ten" of the Ten Commandments and spent her life "disbelieving in God's existence and his love for me," experienced a profound near-death experience when her heart stopped for nine minutes due to complications from pancreatitis. Her medical crisis occurred at age 33 when she was hospitalized with severe pancreatitis that led to cardiac arrest. For nine documented minutes, her heart ceased beating while medical staff worked to resuscitate her.
During those nine minutes of clinical death, McVea reports being escorted to another realm by two angels who were overflowing with love for her. She describes encountering beings of pure light and experiencing emotions beyond human comprehension. Most significantly, she claims to have met God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, experiencing them as one being of radiant light who emanated unconditional love. This encounter created in her "a profound and persistent desire to praise and worship him." The most remarkable aspect of her experience was her interaction with the divine presence. Instead of asking God why He had allowed bad things to happen to her, as she had always planned to do if given the chance, she found herself overwhelmed by His love and instead fell to her knees asking, "Why didn't I do more for you?" This complete reversal of her planned confrontation demonstrates the transformative power of the encounter. Following her resuscitation and recovery, McVea underwent a complete transformation from self-described sinner and atheist to devout believer. She became an author and public speaker, dedicating her life to sharing her experience and faith with others. Her case represents one of the most dramatic conversions associated with an NDE.
