A five-year-old patient contracted meningitis and fell into a coma, during which they experienced a remarkable near-death experience involving an encounter with a deceased sibling they had never been told about. The child's medical condition was critical, with meningitis causing a comatose state that brought them close to death. This case was documented by Netherlands cardiologist Pim van Lommel as part of his extensive research into near-death experiences.
During the NDE, the child was met by a little girl who hugged them and delivered a profound message. The girl said: "I'm your sister. I died a month after I was born. I was named after our grandmother. Our parents called me Rietje for short." She then told the child that they must go back, indicating the experience was not yet their time to remain in the spiritual realm. After being revived and recounting this extraordinary story about meeting an angel sister named Rietje, the child's parents were so shocked that they had to leave the hospital room to compose themselves. The parents later confirmed that they had indeed lost a daughter named Rietje to poisoning a year before this child was born. Crucially, they had made a deliberate decision not to tell their other children about Rietje until they were old enough to understand the tragedy. This case presents compelling evidence of veridical perception during an NDE, as the five-year-old child had no possible way of knowing about a deceased sibling who died before they were born and whose existence had been deliberately kept secret by the parents.
