Vicki Noratuk, blind from birth, was severely injured in a car crash that resulted in multiple traumatic injuries. She sustained a skull fracture, concussion, neck injury, back injury, and leg injury. Most critically, her heart stopped during emergency treatment, rendering her clinically dead for approximately four minutes. During this period of cardiac arrest, she experienced consciousness outside her physical body, with her back against the ceiling of the operating room, observing everything happening on the hospital table below.
From this elevated perspective, she witnessed the medical team's resuscitation efforts with remarkable clarity. She heard one doctor comment that it was unfortunate she would now also be deaf along with being blind, as there was blood on her left ear drum. Another female doctor mentioned that even if she survived the coma, she would likely remain in a vegetative state. These auditory perceptions occurred while she was clinically dead and supposedly unable to process sensory information. The most extraordinary aspect of her experience was gaining visual perception for the first time in her life. Having been blind from birth, she had never experienced visual imagery, even in dreams. During the NDE, she could see her left hand and the ring on her finger. She observed her hair had been shortened and shaved for the medical procedures. She described experiencing different intensities of light, though she could not differentiate colors, having no prior reference for them. The visual experience initially frightened her as she could now perceive things beyond the reach of touch, which had always defined her sensory world. After resuscitation, Vicki returned to her world of darkness but retained vivid memories of her brief visual experience. Her ability to accurately describe visual details during clinical death, despite lifelong blindness, represents one of the most compelling cases of veridical perception in NDE research.
