In 1970, Joseph Dippong, a Canadian businessman, participated in an encounter group session with 17 other businessmen. During a heated discussion filled with hostility, one aggressive participant stared at Dippong and shouted "Let's kill him; let's kill him." What began as an apparent joke quickly turned deadly serious as a dozen or more people piled on top of Dippong on the floor. Initially meant as playful roughhousing to prove a point, the situation spiraled out of control. Dippong found himself completely deprived of oxygen, unable to communicate his distress through voice, hands, or any means as bodies pressed down on him from all sides.
According to the seventeen witnesses present, Dippong's heart stopped beating and he had no apparent pulse. His lungs ceased functioning, and his body, which had turned almost black, lay motionless on the floor. He was declared clinically dead by those present. Chaos erupted in the room as participants realized their "joke" had become a catastrophe, filling them with terror and fear at what they had done. During his clinical death, Dippong experienced remarkable veridical perceptions. He became aware of beautiful colors - all the colors of the rainbow magnified in crystallized light, beaming with brilliance in every direction. He found himself in what seemed like a beautiful pasture with flowers, accompanied by the most beautiful, soothing music he had ever heard. He became aware of being in a tunnel, moving closer toward its end. In the far distance, he noticed two distinct circles. In the middle of one circle appeared a magnificent being that was neither man nor woman, yet both - the most beautiful figure Dippong had ever seen. Immense love poured from this being's eyes, and its face shone with an ever-radiant golden hue surrounded by glorious colors and beautiful white light. Upon his return to life, Dippong carried with him a profound awareness that persisted - that life is eternal and we never truly die. He understood that the physical body is merely a container for something far greater. The experience left him with an unshakeable feeling that life is omnipotent and omniscient, fundamentally transforming his understanding of existence.
