A 48-year-old man who was despondent attempted suicide by hanging himself. During this life-threatening event, he experienced a remarkable near-death experience with out-of-body perception and an unusual form of communication with his wife that ultimately led to his rescue. After losing consciousness from the hanging, the man found himself outside his physical body, aware of his desperate situation but unable to interact with the physical world in conventional ways.
In his out-of-body state, he desperately sought help from his wife who was elsewhere in the home. He attempted to call out to her and alert her to his critical condition, but she could not hear his cries despite his frantic efforts. Realizing that normal communication was impossible from his disembodied state, he attempted something extraordinary - he "went into" her body, merging his consciousness with hers temporarily. Through this merging, he was able to see and hear with her eyes and ears, experiencing the world from her physical perspective. When he made this consciousness contact with her, merging his awareness with hers, she suddenly exclaimed "Oh, my God!" This verbal exclamation indicated that she had received his desperate message on some level. Apparently understanding what was needed through this unusual form of communication, she immediately grabbed a knife and ran out to where the man was hanging. She cut him down just in time to save his life. This case demonstrates not only veridical out-of-body perception but also the apparent ability of consciousness during an NDE to merge with and influence another person's awareness, resulting in life-saving action. The wife's sudden knowledge of the emergency and her immediate response suggest successful communication through consciousness merging during the near-death state.
