A 60-year-old man recovering from surgery experienced a medical crisis when asked by a physiotherapist to get up and sit in a chair. Within five minutes of attempting this movement, the patient's blood pressure dropped precipitously and his condition rapidly deteriorated. He experienced a brief episode of cardiac arrhythmia that reverted spontaneously, though he was immediately put back in bed and became deeply unconscious. The medical team worked urgently to stabilize his condition while the physiotherapist, who was concerned that she had caused the episode, anxiously monitored the situation.
During this period of deep unconsciousness, the patient experienced himself floating out of his body. From this out-of-body perspective, he could clearly see the doctor and nurses working on his physical form below. He observed the medical team's efforts to stabilize him and noted their professional urgency. Most remarkably, he observed the physiotherapist who appeared extremely nervous about having potentially triggered his medical crisis. The specific veridical observation involved seeing the physiotherapist repeatedly hiding behind the bedside curtains and nervously poking her head around from time to time to check on him. This anxious behavior continued throughout his out-of-body experience as she remained concerned about her role in precipitating his condition. The physiotherapist would peek around the curtain, observe briefly, then withdraw behind it again in a pattern of nervous checking. Upon recovering consciousness, the patient immediately reported his out-of-body experience to the medical staff. He described seeing the doctor and nurses working on him and specifically mentioned observing the nervous-looking physiotherapist hiding behind the curtains and repeatedly poking her head around to check on his condition. These perceptions were directly corroborated by Penny Sartori, who was present during the entire procedure.
