On November 30, 1979, Elizabeth Joyce was driving her 14-year-old son Jeffrey to a party when a drunk driver crashed into their car with tremendous force. The BMW's engine was pushed into their passenger door. Joyce held her son protectively as both hit the windshield area, with Jeffrey's head hitting the rearview mirror and Joyce's left side of head hitting the windshield. In the ambulance, Joyce's heart stopped and she experienced a profound near-death experience.
Joyce first felt herself floating upward and found herself outside her body, rushing to the house to alert others about the accident. She discovered she was speaking telepathically and that people could not see or hear her. She watched from a distance as emergency personnel worked on her body. In the ambulance, when her heart stopped, she began floating upward through a tunnel toward a bright light, feeling relief as pain and fear lifted away. She experienced weightlessness and transparency, struggling with profound questions about existence and the nature of reality. She encountered two forms of light that appeared to be escorts - one silver-blue and one orange-red. Within these lights, she recognized her deceased husband Joe and stepson Ronnie, who had died the year before. They communicated telepathically, telling her she must go back because it wasn't her time. They said there was work she still had to do, that she must write, and there were things waiting for her to learn and discover. Behind them was a brilliant yellow light emanating immense love and drawing her forward. Joyce was repeatedly pulled back to her body when her son called to her and held her hand. Her heart stopped multiple times during the ambulance ride. The experience left her with renewed faith, absolute certainty about God's reality, and a sense of having been given a "golden key" of knowledge. She spent ten days hospitalized with severe concussion affecting her left frontal lobe.
