On March 27, 1979, Dr. Yvonne Kason was a medical resident accompanying a critically ill patient on a medical evacuation flight from Sioux Lookout to Winnipeg. The twin-engine aircraft developed mechanical problems when air filters froze, causing it to crash-land on a semi-frozen lake and sink through the ice into 200 feet of water. Kason escaped the sinking plane and swam approximately 100 yards through icy water with a strong current to reach shore, becoming profoundly hypothermic.
During the crash and swim, Kason experienced an extraordinary altered state of consciousness. Initially overwhelmed by fear, she suddenly heard comforting Bible verses in her mind and felt an intense peace, sensing God's presence. While swimming, she heard an inner voice directing her to shore. Her consciousness then lifted out of her body, observing from about 15 feet above as her body struggled through the water. She felt enveloped by a loving force, surrounded by light, and experienced the most ecstatic, blissful emotion of her life. She sensed being lovingly embraced by the intelligent power behind the universe. At the hospital, still hypothermic with body temperature below thermometer readings, her consciousness remained partially separated from her body. When she suggested a hot bath, which proved medically appropriate for treating hypothermia, she was placed in a hot whirlpool. At that moment, her consciousness forcefully re-entered her body through the top of her head, like a genie being sucked back into a bottle. She then knew she would survive. The experience left lasting transformative effects including absolute conviction in God's reality, complete loss of fear of death, and development of psychic abilities beginning one month later. She experienced spontaneous healing of childhood traumas and increased clarity of perception.
