Mark Nims, an 18-year-old with cystic fibrosis, died at Children's Hospital in Boston on January 9, 1989. About seven hours before his death, he had a profound nearing-death awareness experience that he shared in detail with his parents, Nancy and Bob. Mark described leaving his body and traveling to "another plane of existence," where he experienced extraordinary spiritual realities.
During this experience, Mark met beings he called "the masters" who told and showed him many things. He was surrounded by bright lights and found himself in a realm of incredible beauty. He told his mother Nancy that she would "pee in her pants if she knew where he had been," emphasizing the overwhelming nature of what he witnessed. Mark stated that his suffering was over and that there is no suffering in the place he visited and where he would soon return permanently. Mark had no fear of dying because he had already been to "the other side." He described many specific things he had seen and heard during his experience, knowledge he had gained, and repeatedly emphasized that it is "so, so beautiful there." He assured his parents he would soon return to that state when he died. Shortly after sharing this detailed account, Mark had another nearing-death awareness experience in which he talked with Nancy's mother, who had died less than a year before. A few hours later, he died peacefully. His parents later shared their story at conferences and on television to help other grieving parents, feeling that Mark had "sent" them to share this message of hope.
