Geri experienced a near-death experience at age 15 following surgery when she had a severe allergic reaction to drugs and nearly died. During the medical crisis, she left her body and floated toward the ceiling, where she could see and hear everything that was being said by the medical team trying to revive her. From this elevated perspective, she observed the resuscitation efforts being performed on her physical body below.
While her physical body had been experiencing great pain, she felt only joy and peace as she floated above. She reported that she didn't make it to the tunnel that many NDErs describe, but she did "feel" the light - experiencing its presence without fully entering it. The contrast between her body's pain and her consciousness's peace was striking and memorable. Eventually she returned to her body and experienced severe depression for three days afterward, struggling to adjust to being back in physical form. Upon reflection on this experience, Geri came to realize that there is a reason for everything, even physical suffering. Prior to her NDE, she had struggled to accept that God could allow great suffering in the world, but the experience gave her a new perspective on the meaning of pain and difficulty. This NDE profoundly impacted Geri's life and worldview. Years later, she was able to use her experience to help her first husband through his dying process from cancer, providing comfort through sharing her knowledge that death is not final.
