Susan, a 44-year-old woman, was dying of breast cancer that had been diagnosed in 1984. After a five-year battle with the disease, she was hospitalized in severe pain and taking multiple medications. During her final hospitalization, she became extremely depressed, clinging to her family while crying and sobbing "I don't want to die." The entire family was increasingly upset and struggled to communicate with her during this difficult time.
Then one evening, Susan woke from a nap and described an extraordinary experience to her friend and family. She reported seeing and talking with her deceased uncle and a friend who had also died of breast cancer. Susan told everyone present that these deceased individuals were "waiting for her" and that she was now ready to die. Her entire persona transformed dramatically - witnesses described it as if a huge weight had been lifted from her shoulders. This nearing-death awareness experience completely changed Susan's approach to dying. Her acceptance allowed those around her to begin accepting her impending death as well. Susan spent her remaining time talking individually with family members and friends, sharing important thoughts and feelings. Her daughter commented that she felt fortunate her mother reached this peaceful state, enabling conversations that otherwise never would have occurred. Susan died peacefully in October 1989, surrounded by loved ones who had been given the gift of meaningful final exchanges through her transformation from fear to acceptance.
