Around 1840, a Ute warrior named Wah-ker (or Wakara) died and his spirit went to heaven. He met the Lord sitting upon a throne dressed in white. Though he wanted to stay, the Lord told him that he must return to earth. The Lord gave Wah-ker a new name and prophetic information about the coming of white people who would be his friends, and that he must treat them kindly. Following his return, Wah-ker converted to Mormonism at one stage, though he alternated between respect for and hostility toward whites. The experience provided him with specific prophetic knowledge about future events and instructions for how to interact with the coming European settlers. His NDE was recorded by Mormon missionary and interpreter Dimick Huntington, who documented the spiritual encounter and its impact on Wah-ker's subsequent life and relationships with both his own people and the arriving white settlers.
