Howard Smith, EdD, experienced an NDE during an emergency hospital visit approximately 20 years prior. He had lost a high volume of blood and was feeling faint due to what he later learned was a rupture in his esophagus. While lying on his back on the emergency room examining table, he noticed the overhead lights on the ceiling. He then went into shock, witnessing the light over his head becoming increasingly dimmer until it disappeared, after which he perceived a bright light. Smith described being in a black void and witnessing a tunnel comprised of light - a very bright white light that became focused with everything else black and no peripheral vision. He looked down the tunnel at the light, and when he came to, he still had the vivid memory of this light. The tunnel of light was non-threatening, warm, and welcoming. His affect while looking down the tunnel was calm, content, peaceful, and positive. His consciousness continued in the domain of the light separate from his unconscious body. He was not compelled to move forward in the tunnel. Upon regaining consciousness, he discovered the nurse had moved his body to a sitting position while unconscious. His NDE Scale score was 8, confirming a genuine NDE. The experience provided lasting peace regarding dying and reinforced his belief in life after death.
