Robert was admitted to the emergency room on September 10, 2003, with chest pain from a heart attack. He was being treated with clot-busting medicine for a blockage in the vessel feeding the bottom of his heart, as determined by electrocardiograph. After ninety minutes of treatment, he told the doctor he felt dizzy and immediately blacked out.
During his cardiac arrest, Robert experienced sinking through the bottom of the stretcher into what felt like water. He had a panicking sensation, feeling like he was flailing his arms to swim back to the surface while internally arguing with himself to let go. He was fighting for his life in this drowning-like sensation. Suddenly, he found himself standing twenty feet away from the stretcher, calmly watching the doctor perform CPR on his body. During this out-of-body experience, he was aware he existed only as consciousness - no body, no pain, no problems, no worries. He described this state as "great." As he observed the chest compressions, he had the realization that the doctor couldn't control whether he lived or died - only he could control that. The moment he had this thought, he was immediately back in his body and awake. The experience left him unafraid of death and actually looking forward to it, though he was disappointed he had "screwed it up" with his thought about control.
