A 21-year-old woman was riding her bicycle when she suddenly realized an oncoming car would hit her regardless of any maneuver she might make. At the moment of this realization, she experienced a profound alteration in consciousness that began with time dramatically slowing down. She made a conscious decision to let go of the handlebars, cover her head with her hands, and scream, all while time seemed to stretch infinitely.
During the impact and the seconds that followed, she became completely disconnected from any bodily sensations. Instead of feeling the physical trauma of the accident, she experienced her entire life flashing before her in a rapid series of typical scenes from her past. This life review was accompanied by an overwhelming sense of peace and well-being that transcended the dangerous situation she was in. The most striking aspect of her experience was the complete absence of fear or panic. A clear thought entered her mind: "Well, if I die, that's all right; I've had a good life." This acceptance was accompanied by a feeling of being apart from her physical body, as if observing the event from a different perspective. The cognitive changes included not only the time distortion and accelerated thought processes but also a sense of revelation and understanding about her life. Throughout the experience, she maintained clear consciousness and later could recall every detail vividly, from the slowed perception of time to the panoramic life review and the profound peace that enveloped her during what should have been a terrifying moment.
