During a terrorist attack on Pan American World Airways Flight 110 on December 17, 1973, a flight attendant sought refuge in the only two seats not yet on fire as the aircraft became a burning inferno. She crawled onto the seats and experienced an extraordinary out-of-body experience. She described being surrounded by incredible light, happiness, and joy that was indescribable. From this vantage point outside her body, she could see herself clearly through the smoke, lying in her uniform with her eyes closed. She observed that she was not moving despite fire being everywhere around her. She questioned why she wasn't moving but felt she didn't care because she was so happy where she was in this state of consciousness. A passenger's scream for help ("Open the window. Somebody open the window. Help me!") broke through her experience. She thought "I have to help that lady" and immediately returned to her body. The experience transformed a moment of extreme mortal danger into one of profound peace and transcendent joy.
