A Marine pilot jumped from a burning aircraft but his parachute failed to open, resulting in a 15,000-foot free fall lasting 2 minutes and 24 seconds at speeds of 75-80 mph into the Pacific Ocean. During the fall, he experienced profound peritraumatic dissociation. Multiple times he found himself 15-20 feet away from his body, watching himself struggle with the parachute. He vividly observed his orange flight suit, yellow helmet with three blue diamonds, and was surprised to see he was wearing brown high-top boots rather than the low boots he thought he had on. The colors were extraordinarily vivid. He described the experience as going "in, out, in, out" between his body and the observer position. Upon impact with the ocean at terminal velocity, he suffered catastrophic injuries including two shattered ankles, broken legs, split pelvis, and collapsed lung, yet felt no pain until rescued. He reported the out-of-body state was "real as could be" and unlike any experience before or since.
