A gentleman from Colorado experienced a Type III Less Than Positive NDE following a head-on car collision that required eight and a half hours of surgery. During the surgical procedure, he heard a voice challenging him to curse God and die. The experience had profound spiritual implications and continues to affect him eleven years later.
In the midst of surgery, a voice came to him saying "You're busted up. Your body is in bad shape. You're probably not going to make it. Why don't you just curse God and die!" The voice was as real and audible as any physical voice. He responded "I will serve God!" Immediately, an authoritative voice called him by his Christian name saying "Come up here." As he moved out of his body, the pain from his injuries ceased completely. He found himself in the presence of a being he perceived as a high-ranking spiritual authority who would give orders that must be followed without question. This being led him to a large gymnasium-like room with massive black double doors, eight feet wide and ten to twelve feet tall. He was instructed to put his ear to the door and listen. What he heard was a virtual ocean of voices in unimaginable agony - screaming, gnashing of teeth, and torture. When asked what it was, the being explained these were "all of the ones that are in a place where God's light does not go," suffering from the absence of His love. The being clarified this had no end, which particularly disturbed the subject. The experience served as both a test of faith and a warning. The subject was brought back with the message to tell others about what he heard. The initial temptation to curse God, followed by the revelation of hell's reality, strengthened his faith and gave him a mission to warn others about the consequences of separation from God.
