Gary experienced a Type II Less Than Positive NDE during a suicide attempt. The experience had a distinctly dark and mechanistic quality that he found deeply disturbing. He initially thought he had entered hell, describing strange sounds including ravens making unusual noises and what seemed like crow sounds coming from a sophisticated machine-like intelligence.
During the experience, Gary perceived himself within a giant mechanical device or system. The presence he encountered was not a personality intelligence like a human, but rather a cold, impersonal force that operated by certain rules and laws without creative spontaneity. He heard a voice that told him he would be "gotten by this creature," though no name was given. The voice and presence reminded him of Dante's Inferno - dark, threatening, and devoid of goodness. Gary found the mechanistic nature of the experience particularly unsettling. As someone who respects intelligence and well-mechanized systems like computers, it was logical to him that if he chose suicide as his way out, he would encounter a mechanistic presence. The experience seemed to reflect his own mindset and choices, presenting him with a realm that operated on cold logic rather than love or compassion. The experience served as a powerful deterrent to his suicidal ideation. The encounter with this impersonal, machine-like realm of consciousness made him reconsider his choices and ultimately choose life over the mechanistic void he had glimpsed.
