Anthony, a fire-medic who later became a policeman, attempted suicide at age 36 due to despondency after being diagnosed HIV positive. He took a quantity of sleeping pills and was transported to the hospital deeply unconscious. Medical staff worked to save his life while he experienced a Type II Less Than Positive NDE characterized by darkness and divine judgment.
During the experience, Anthony felt his body floating in complete darkness - the darkest black he had ever seen. He described it as if someone had placed a body in space, feeling bound and tied up though he could not identify specific restraints. He was unable to move or free himself, experiencing complete paralysis in the void. Terrifying sounds filled his ears - annoying siren or horn-like sounds constantly repeating "bomp, bomp, bomp." In this dark void, Anthony heard a voice he immediately recognized as God, though it was not authoritative but rather peaceful and calm. God said: "If this is what you're going to do, then this is where you're going to be." Anthony perceived this as being in hell despite seeing no devils, pitchforks, or flames. He thought "It's too late, I'm already dead" because he saw medical staff covering his body with a sheet. Then suddenly everything disappeared and he returned to his body. The experience confirmed his Catholic upbringing teaching that suicide is wrong. It has led to tremendous life changes - he has come to terms with his HIV diagnosis and now teaches HIV prevention in the workplace, feeling no bitterness about his condition.
