Mike experienced a near-death experience at age 9 when he fell from a cliff, suffering severe trauma. His NDE initially followed normal patterns commonly reported in near-death literature, but took a disturbing turn while he was traveling through the tunnel. During this tunnel experience, he encountered something that profoundly disturbed him and seemed connected to a tragic event from his earlier childhood.
While in the tunnel, Mike felt the presence of an evil entity and heard a horrible, animal-like growling noise. This frightening encounter was particularly puzzling given his young age, as children typically report more positive NDEs. The evil presence and growling sounds created an atmosphere of fear and threat during what might otherwise have been a peaceful transition experience. The significance of this frightening element became clearer when Mike's earlier history was revealed. At approximately age 6, Mike had been involved in a tragic accident where he and another small friend were fighting. During the altercation, Mike picked up a piece of lumber with a large nail protruding from it, swung it at his friend, struck him in the head, and accidentally killed him. He had attempted unsuccessfully to hide the body, though police later dismissed the case as an accident. This earlier tragedy provided a possible explanation for the frightening aspects of Mike's NDE. The evil presence and growling sounds in the tunnel may have been related to the unresolved trauma and guilt from accidentally causing his friend's death. The NDE seemed to reflect the spiritual and psychological burden this young child was carrying from the earlier incident.
