Marsha, a 40-year-old married woman living in Connecticut, experienced an NDE on January 16, 1986, when she was 32 years old as a result of severe complications during pregnancy. Like many premature babies of her generation, Marsha was born after only six months of pregnancy and developed retinopathy of prematurity, leaving her severely visually impaired. She has limited vision in her left eye but cannot read print and sees people as blurry shapes. She uses a guide dog for navigation.
During her medical crisis, Marsha found herself out of her body and able to see with remarkable clarity. When coming back to her body, she could see herself lying asleep-like on a bed or table. Her vision during this phase was completely normal and clear, without any of the problems that characterize her physical sight. She described being able to see everything perfectly, a dramatic contrast to her everyday severely limited vision. In the otherworldly portion of her experience, Marsha found herself in a room filled with white light and gold on the walls. She could see white birds and angels, along with many people, all illuminated and reflecting divine light. Her visual perception in this realm was perfect and detailed - she emphasized that she could see everything, all the people all the way back, with no visual problems whatsoever. She could clearly perceive colors, which appeared exactly as they were supposed to be. Marsha was emphatic that her vision during the NDE was perfect, unlike anything she experiences with her physical eyes. She noted that since her eyes were back with her body, this perfect vision must have involved some kind of special sight beyond normal physical seeing. The clarity and perfection of her visual experience stood in stark contrast to her lifelong visual impairment.
