This man experienced a striking out-of-body episode during a cardiac arrest fifty-one years ago when he was nineteen. The experience occurred as he was being transported down from the second floor on a stretcher. He had the strange and vivid sensation of observing the scene from very high above the stairwell, watching the stretcher being carried by four of his comrades. From this elevated vantage point, he could see everything clearly while simultaneously hearing the voices of those below as if they were very far away. The visual perspective was remarkably clear and comprehensive, allowing him to observe the entire scene from an impossible physical position above the stairwell. The auditory component added another dimension to the experience, with sounds reaching him but seeming distant and removed despite his clear visual perception. This dissociation between his consciousness and physical body was complete and undeniable. The memory of floating above and observing his own body being transported remained vivid even after five decades. Upon returning to normal consciousness, he retained perfect recall of what he had observed from this elevated perspective, including details that would have been impossible to perceive from his physical position on the stretcher.
