Howard suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated by Dr. Laurin Bellg and her team. He was placed on a ventilator following successful resuscitation. During his cardiac arrest and subsequent coma, Howard had an extraordinary out-of-body experience with multiple veridical perceptions. He accurately recalled specific details of the resuscitation including Dr. Bellg fumbling to get her stethoscope out of her pocket, her pens falling on the bed, and her specific comments while inserting the intubation tube. Howard described rising up through the ceiling, feeling the different densities of materials as he passed through the building structure, including insulation and wiring. He found himself in a room above the ICU that looked like a hospital setting but was unusually quiet with mannequin-like figures in beds with IVs. This room had a central area with computer workstations. Upon awakening, medical staff confirmed all his observations. The room above was identified as a nurse training center with medical mannequins, exactly as Howard described. The existence of this training facility was not generally known even to non-nursing hospital staff.
