Rich Borutta, an electronics engineer specializing in lasers and fiber optics, experienced an NDE in 1990 while hospitalized for liver failure resulting from alcoholism. During a procedure to drain fluid from his abdomen under anesthesia, he overheard mention of a hemorrhage. He felt himself being pulled downward into darkness, thinking "This can't be real." He then became aware of a pinpoint of light in the distance and was attracted to it, beginning to resolve activity around it before being suddenly jerked away.
His hearing returned and he heard someone say "150 jewels" (joules), recognizing these as units for measuring laser outputs. After administration of atropine and other procedures, he regained consciousness in his hospital bed. Still feeling connected to the light realm, he resolved to return. During his second journey, he encountered "feathery" figures gathering around the light and was briefly conducted into the light itself, which was teeming with exhilarating activity. He expressed desire to straighten out unfinished business from his previous life with help from these entities. The veridical element involved hearing "150 joules" during resuscitation, indicating defibrillation while he was under anesthesia. His specialized knowledge as an electronics engineer allowed him to recognize this technical medical terminology. The experience included classic NDE elements: darkness, tunnel-like passage, brilliant light, and spiritual beings. Following the NDE, his alcohol addiction disappeared completely and his liver began functioning normally. A subsequent biopsy found no evidence of permanent damage despite pre-NDE scans showing serious blockage suggesting cancer or cirrhosis. The experience led to profound life changes and loss of fear of death.
